Peshawar: Al-Qaeda has named Farman Ali Shinwari, a native of Pakistan’s Khyber Agency, as the new chief of operations in Pakistan, media reported on Tuesday.
According to reports, little is really know of this particular individual outside of al-Qaeda leadership circles, however it is said however that Shinwari has “distinguished himself” in combat operations against “occupation forces” in Afghanistan.
“Much like in other military services you do tours in combat with different al-Qaeda units or cells in different parts of Afghanistan”, said one source inside Pakistan military official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
“This new guy they say has done it all…launched attacked, assassinated people, beheaded at least one individual we know of and inspired scores of young people in both Afghanistan and Pakistan to martyr themselves in the cause against the crusaders. On top of that he is extremely smart and internet expert”, he said.
Shinwari is set to replace Badr Mansour , who was killed in north Waziristan, an area bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan, by a US drone strike in January.
According to report, Shinwari was “approved” as leader in Pakistan after consultations by al-Qaeda’s top leadership and through a complicated “ratification process” by its commanders in Pakistan.
Al-Qaeda’s Dawa [Propagation] and Media Department, led by a man called “Ustad Ahmad Farooq” and disseminates speeches on Taliban and al-Qaeda websites, including As-Sahab, which announced Shinwari’s promotion as official on April 30, 2012.
Shinwari’s promotion means he will now oversee the “day to day” operations of attacks by al-Qaeda and the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on North Atlantic Treaty Organization and U.S. supply lines passing through the Khyber Agency into Afghanistan from Pakistan.
