Amir Khan Los Vegas: Danny Garcia has defeated British born Pakistani boxer Amir Khan to win the WBA light welterweight belt after after knocking out the British in four rounds.
Khan made a positive start and used his speed advantage to land a number of solid combinations during the opening two rounds.
However, the Brit then hit the floor for the first time as a light-welterweight late on in round three after Garcia landed a huge left hook to his jaw.
A groggy Khan got to his feet and was allowed to continue after the had count reached eight.
That punch was the beginning of the end though, as Garcia sensed his chance and went after his opponent in round four, knocking him down again with a glancing left hook.
The referee counted Khan to eight again but, despite the 25-year-old’s protestations that he was fit to continue, the match was ended.
After taking a minute to regain his composure, Khan said: “It wasn’t my night. I’ve just watched the replay and I was coming in with my hands down and Danny took advantage.
“I respect Danny. He was countering very well against me. I got a little complacent and he took advantage and caught me.
“I’m a little surprised the referee stopped it and I thought he was going to let me continue.
“My mind was clear and I thought my legs were OK. But I respect the referee, judges and the commission for their decision. Who knows, maybe they made the right call?”
