Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari has appointed Fakhruddin G Ebrahim Chief Election Commissioner, said a statement issued by the presidency on Friday.
It said the president had signed the summary of appointment of Ebrahim.A parliamentary committee of Pakistan People’s Party and its coalition partners in the federal government the Awami National Party and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement had agreed on his name on Monday after they discussed names for the post proposed by the main opposition party the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.
Political analysts see the consensus on Ebrahim’s name a good omen for the country’s democratic process.
