Sweden: Women can lower the risk of developing Rheumatoid arthritis by drinking more than three alcoholic drinks every week for at least a decade, finds a new study published in journal BMJ.
In Rheumatoid arthritis, body starts attacking its own joints and tissues. This disease specially hit women. Quitting smoke is the only reason known to lower the risk of developing Rheumatoid arthritis.
The study has shown a relationship between Rheumatoid arthritis and alcohol but it has not proven anything.
Study had no distinction among wine, spirits and beer. The standard glass of a drink, in this study, is a pint of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.7 ounces of liquor.
But how alcohol helps in lessening the Rheumatoid arthritis risk is not clear. Researchers think that alcohol help by turning down the body immune system and decreasing the production of proteins require for inflammatory process.
Dr. Martin Jan Bergman, a clinical associate professor of medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, said “this study adds more fuel to the fire regarding the beneficial effects of alcohol. This is one of multiple studies that have shown that alcohol can have a beneficial effect on risk for [rheumatoid arthritis].”
And one more thing is that alcohol may not be beneficial for those who already have the condition. Rheumatoid arthritis medications are venomous for liver and so is alcohol, so you have to evaluate the pros and cons of alcohol if you are already on these medications.
So the best solution for Rheumatoid arthritis remains the same, to avoid smoking or quit it.
