Paris: Syria has come under international pressure after governments around the world—mostly Western powers—expelled Syrian ambassadors on Tuesday after the tragic Houla massacre in which nearly 108 people, including many children.
Countries like the US, Britain, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands believe Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime is behind the brutal close-range shootings of scores of children and parents in their homes, AP reported.
After talks with Assad, UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan said Syria was at a “tipping point” and asked him to take “bold steps” to see that his peace plan was implemented. However, Syrian president put blame on ‘’terrorists”, a state TV reported.
The countries which expelled Syrian envoys were also looking forward to impose strict sanctions on Syria, Britain’s foreign secretary said.
The Houla incident is the deadliest incident ever since the uprising against Assad last year.
A UN report Tuesday said 49 children and 34 women were among the 108 people who died, but it did not decisively say who carried out most of the killings, AP said.
