New York: Chen Guangcheng, a blind Chinese dissident, arrived in the US on Saturday after being allowed to leave a hospital in Beijing.
This could lessen the tension between the two countries. Last month Chen escaped from house arrest in north-eastern China and found a shelter in the US Embassy, which was a matter of embarrassment for China.
A United Airlines plane carrying Chen, his wife and two children, landed in at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey shortly after 6 pm on Saturday, Reuters reported.
The NYU School of Law said that Chen was going to study as a fellow at the institution.
Ben Rhodes, member of the National Security Council and a senior White House official lauded Chen’s arrivals in the US.
“We welcome this development and the fact that he will be able to pursue a course of study here in the United States upon his arrival,” he said during the Group of Eight summit. “We are pleased that this was able to reach a resolution.”
Earlier this month, the Foreign Ministry said Chen could apply to study abroad, a move seen as a way of easing rift between the world two greatest economies.
