Wembley: John Terry entered the record books after Chelsea celebrated their fourth FA Cup victory in six years defeating Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley Stadium.
Brazilian midfielder Ramires scored in first half while Didier Drogba showed his heroics in the second to help Chelsea score a couple of goals. For Liverpool, Andy Carroll scored the only goal.
“It’s fantastic, it’s what we live for,” BBC quoted Terry as saying.
“We spoke about winning yesterday and we’ve had a tough competition in the FA Cup this season and we’ve won. It was a great performance.
“At times people have slated us as too old, past it or not together but as a team we come together and unite when our backs are against the wall and we’ve done that superbly in the last 16 or 17 games.”
Drogba did not lag behind like Terry and his second-half goal made him the first player to score in four FA Cup finals.
The defeat denied Liverpool the opportunity to end a largely disappointing season with a second piece of silverware following their League Cup triumph over Cardiff City in February.
However, the win was not a piece of cake for Chelsea as the determined Liverpool gave them a tough time. It could have been an equaliser in the 82nd minute when Carroll’s close-range header was parried onto the underside of the crossbar by Petr Cech.
Thinking the ball had crossed the line, Carroll started to celebrate, but referee Phil Dowd and his assistants remained unmoved.
“We were excellent in the last half hour but a game of football lasts for 90 minutes,” Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish said. “We left ourselves too much to do. You can’t lose two goals in the fashion that we lost them and expect to win.”
“I thought it went in but if it hasn’t then give the officials the credit they deserve,” he said.
