London: While United Kingdom’s capital city is choosing its new mayor for next four years, the country is holdingĀ local and mayoral elections in England, Wales and Scotland.
Mayors polls are being held in London, Liverpool and Salford while voters have to poll for 4,700 seats in 128 English councils on account of local elections.
People in 10 different UK cities are also voting in referendums on whether to elect a mayor or not for next term.
Polling stations opened at 0700 BST and close at 2200 BST, with the first council results expected to come in during the early hours of Friday, BBC reported.
“Rain is predicted across much of Wales and southern and central England, with Scotland and northern England remaining largely dry.”
The toughest and the most important poll is being carried out in London where Boris Johnson is competing with former mayor Ken Livingstone for next term as mayor.
Other candidates include UKIP’s Lawrence Webb,Ā BNP’s Carlos Cortiglia, the Green Party’s Jenny Jones and Independent Siobhan Benita.
For the first in Liverpool and Salford, mayoral elections are being held with 12 Ā candidates are running for mayor in Liverpool while 10 are standing in Salford.
People of Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Coventry, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Nottingham, Sheffield and Wakefield are also voting on whether to elect their mayor or not.
