Lahore: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf is going through a tough period as it announces party elections after ongoing membership campaign across the country.
It seems that party elections have magnified divisions between various factions of the party.
“Old and loyal PTI leaders and workers have formed a strong alliance against leaders remained associated with former dictator Pervez Musharraf,” a local daily quoted party insiders as saying.
“After announcement of elections, lobbying for leading posts of the party has divided PTI into various factions,” they added.
“PTI leader Ahsan Rasheed wants his relative Hamid Meraj to be party’s Lahore president while former governor of Punjab Mian Azhar is making efforts to ensure the same post for Faroq Amjad Mir.”
Close friends of party president Imran Khan also looked divided over issue of part elections.
“Close aides of Khan including Mubashar Boby and Yousuf Salli want Abdul Aleem Khan as PTI Lahore president while Umer Farooq is canvassing for Mian Mahmudur Rasheed,” they noted.
Some of PTI leaders are also perplex on whom they should support.
Ahsan Rasheed, who was earlier supporting old leaders of the party, decided to favor Jahangir Tareen for post of PTI Punjab President after former foreign minister Shah Mahmud Qureshi faction put its weight on Tareen’s side.
“Tough decisions should be taken by Imran Khan if he wants PTI to remain united after the elections,” the sources concluded.
