Islamabad: Cancer-causing arsenic was found in seven brands of mineral water, Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) revealed in its quarterly report.
The report said that besides cancer of lungs, liver, kidney, skin, prostrate and nose, the element could cause diabetes, kidney diseases, heart diseases, hypertension and birth defects.
Besides this, sodium was present in five brands of bottled water, potassium in one and bacteriological contamination in three brands of bottled water.
Diseases caused by these contaminations include cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery, hepatitis, typhoid, hypertension and Hyperkalemia.
PCRWR spokesperson Lubna Naheed said that samples of 75 commercially available brands of mineral/bottled water were collected for the quarter January-March from Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Bahawalpur, Faisalabad, Multan, Sargodha, DI Khan, Sialkot, Sahiwal, Peshawar, Quetta, Karachi and Hyderabad.
Comparison of analytical findings with permissible limits of the Pakistan Standard Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) revealed that 12 brands were unsafe due to chemical (arsenic, sodium, potassium) or microbiological (coliform bacteria) contamination.
