Setting aside all speculations about his future, Chipper Jones announced that he will retire at the end of this Major League Baseball (MLB) season.
“I was anxious to get this announcement out and get this over with so that there is some finality to it,” Jones said. “I’m tired of the speculative questions as to when it’s going to happen. This way, we get it out in the open. It’s final. It’s definite.”
Flanked by his managers and general managers at a news conference Thursday, visibly emotional Jones expressed gratitude for his family, friends and fans for their support in his 23-year relationship with the Braves team, 19 of them in the Major Leagues.
“I am happy that I have spent my whole career with the Braves.”
“My colleagues knew how important it was to stay in one place and be the face of the franchise. While I don’t consider myself to be in their realm, I’m awfully proud to say I’ve been a part of this organization for so long.”
Considered to be a legend, Jones has gained a stature of a baseball in giant in Cooperstown.
Jones played significant role in Braves win of 1995 World Series as a rookie third baseman. His performance also imagined as a key in 11 of its 14 consecutive titles for Braves.
