Madrid: The world No 1 footballer Lionel Messi broke Barcelona’s 60-year-old goal-scoring record with a hat-trick in a 5-3 win over La Liga rivals Granada at the Nou Camp, media reported on Tuesday.
According to reports Messi, 24, equaled the record with a volley off a post in the 17th minute and then broke it with a lob in the 68th minute.
The Argentine’s third – and 234th goal – came four minutes from time.
Earlier the record was occupied by Cesar Rodriguez, who played for Barcelona in the 1940s and 1950s.
He was thought to have scored 235 goals for the club, but research by Barcelona’s Centre of Documentation and Studies and La Vanguardia newspaper showed he had scored three goals fewer.
Messi, the World Player of the Year who is in his eighth season with Barcelona, has now scored 54 goals in all competitions this season.
It is to be mentioned that Messi scored 16 goals in 2007-08, 38 in 2008-09, 47 in 2009-10, 53 in 2010-11 and 54 in the ongoing session of 2011-12.
