London: Google doodle is celebrating vernal equinox, or the first day of spring, on its home pages in European and North American countries, however the doodle is not appearing in South Asian countries like Pakistan and India.
Generally said that on an equinox the day and the night are of equal length but it may not hold true for all locations on earth. An equinox occurs two times in a year when the sun crosses the plane of the earth’s equator. It refers to the fact that this equinox marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere.
The Google spring equinox doodle has been designed by Marimekko, a Finnish textile and clothing design company founded in 1951.
The Persian new year, Nowruz, also corresponds with the vernal equinox while many Iranians, Kurds and others will celebrate the 13-day festival.
The term equinox can also be used in a broader sense, meaning the date when such a passage happens. The name “equinox” is derived from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night), because around the equinox, the night and day have approximately equal length.
An equinox happens each year at two specific moments in time (rather than two whole days), when there is a location (the sub-solar point) on the Earth’s equator, where the center of the Sun can be observed to be vertically overhead, occurring around March 20 and September 22 each year.
