Islamabad: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has issued notices to Babar Awan, Rehman Malik, Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, Pervez Musharraf and eight others in petition, seeking to lodge a new FIR in Benazir Bhutto assassination case.
An SC bench headed by Chief Justice Itikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing the petition. The CJ sought trial court record into BB murder case and ruled that a larger bench of the apex court would took up the petition on new FIR.
He questioned defence counsel Amjad Iqbal whether new FIA could be lodged into case. The lawyer said an FIR was already registered into the murder.
“Tell us what is happening in the case as president during his Garhi Khuda Bux speech asked us what happened to BB case,” the CJ remarked. He said the president and prime minister used to said court didn’t take up cases.
The chief justice asked Attorney General Maulvi Anwarul Haq to watch video clips and pieces of newspapers featuring the president’s speech of Garhi Khuda Bux.
He said BB was not only a chairperson of a political party instead she was a two-time prime minister of the country. “ Why government is not giving priority to such a serious case” he said.
The CJ said cases against former police officers and ex president had been heard in courts. Justice Tariq Pervez asked whether the government was satisfied with the investigation into BB murder case.
During the hearing Justice Chaudhry also remarked that there was no independent investigation agency in the country.
The hearing was put off for two weeks.
