Karachi: Participants of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) rally turned violent as police tried to stop them using tear gas and resorting to aerial firing and baton charge.
A large number of residents of Lyari neighbourhood, belonging to the PPP, took to the streets to press the government for acceptance of their demands.
Heavy contingent of police resorted to aerial firing and teargas as protesters tried to displace containers that were erected to stop entrance in city’s Red Zone area.
Despite the hectic efforts police were unable to prevent the protesters to enter the Red Zone as some of the PPP workers managed to enter the area. Police have arrested several participants.
A massive gridlock has been witnessed in areas adjacent to II Chandrigar road and Shaheen Complex while hundreds of workers in nearby buildings have trapped in their offices.
Heavy contingent of police have been deployed on MT Khan Road where US Consulate is located.
PPP workers led by Zafar Baloch have staged a sit-in on the II Chandrigarh road. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has ordered Home Minister Manzoor Wasan to take immediate steps to bring the situation under control.
