Tokyo: LG Electronics Inc has plans to launch a 55-inch set based on organic light-emitting diodes, or OLEDs. The Korean company is set to show it off at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which starts January 10.
DisplaySearch has estimated the new 55-inch OLED TV models will start selling for about US$8,000 in the third quarter of 2012, before falling below US$4,000 by the end of 2013 as sales volumes increase and companies find ways to manufacture the sets less expensively.
Tim Alessi, director of home electronics development at LG’s United States arm, said its set will likely go on sale in the fourth quarter. The company isn’t revealing the price.
The display assures brighter and sharper images with the integration of a white OLED pixel in every typical RGB pixel.
The LG OLED TV is 1,000 times faster than LED/LCD displays.
The LG Color Refiner will help improve color quality and clarity, keep down color distortion and enhance the viewing experience even at extreme angles.
LG further said the Oxide TFT technology backplane is more cost-effective to build than regular Low Temperature Poly Silicon (LTPS) base panels of current OLED displays.
