Lahore: The preliminary meeting of National Curriculum Revision Committee on Criminology was held at HEC Regional Centre Lahore from December 21 to 23, 2011, which was Presided by Prof. Dr. Fateh Muhammad Burfat, University of Karachi.
The main objective of the committee was to prepare the CurriculumĀ for BS and MS in Criminology. Dr. Fateh Muhammad Burfat, University of Karachi, Prof. Dr. Muhammad HafeezĀ Dean Behavioral andĀ Social Sciences, University of the Punjab, Prof. Dr. Masroor Ellahi Baber Director, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore, Dr. Ghulam Yasin Assistant Professor/Head of Sociology Department, Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan, Prof. Dr. Abdur Rashid Chairman, Department of Law, University of Sargodha, Sargodha, Dr. Nabi Bux Narejo, Incharge, Department of Criminology, University of Sindh, Hyderabad, Dr. Rana Saba Sultan, Chairperson, Department of Sociology, University of Karachi, Dr. Basharat Hussain, Assistant Professor, Institute of Social Work, Sociology and Gender Studies,Ā University of Peshawar, Dr. Khalil Ahmad Assistant Professor Institute of Social & Cultural Studies,University of the Punjab, and Muhammad Farooq Lecturer Institute of Social & Cultural Studies, University of the Punjab, Lahore attended the meeting.
After thorough and having three days deliberations the committee unanimously approved the draft curricula of the B.S. (4-year program) and M.S. Criminology degree programs.
Malik Arshad Mahmood, Director Curriculum HEC Islamabad thanked Prof. Dr. Fateh Muhammad Burfat the Convener for his dynamic leadership and visionary input for the Development of BS and MS programs for Criminology in Pakistan. He also thanked the Secretary and all the members of the committee. He said that their efforts will go long way in developing workable, useful and comprehensive degree programs in Criminology.
The committee as developed the course outlines and recommended the following subjects for BS four years and MS two years programs in Criminology. Introduction to Criminology, Sociology of Deviance, Theoretical Perspectives on Crime and Criminals, Juvenile Delinquency, Criminal Psychology, Islamic Perspective on Crime and Punishment, Applied Criminology, Criminal Justice System, Penology, Introduction to Security Studies, Correctional Institutions, Study of Crime Patterns, Research Methodology in Criminology, Forensic Criminology, Police and Policing, Victimology, Procedures of Evidence in Criminal Law, Organized Crime and Money Laundering, Peace and Conflict Resolution, Mass Media and Crime, Cyber Crime, Community Justice and Crime Prevention, Methods of Criminal Investigation, Drug Abuse and Related Crime, Human Rights, Gender and Crime, Violence and Terrorism.
The HEC of Pakistan has already finalized the courses of study for two years Masters in Criminological Sciences in 2003. This committee was also presided by Prof. Dr. Fateh Muhammad Burfat and he also worked as a convener for the committee.
The meeting ended with the vote of thanks to the chair and HEC officials for providing an ideal environment to discuss the agenda. The convener of the NCRC also thanked the members for their inputs in revising the Criminology curriculum keeping in view the requirement of the country and to make it more practical, competitive and effective. Draft curriculum will be circulated to the members for their feed back/input to finalize it before the next meeting.
