Islamabad: The Chief Justice Supreme Court Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Tuesday said if Independent Power Producers (IPPs) were run at full capacity there will be no need to hire Rental Power Plants (RPPs).
The comments came during the hearing of Rental Power Project case. Khuwaja Tariq Raheem was representing the Ministry of Water and Power.
The CJ remarked why were Rental Power Plants hired despite the fact that there was gas shortage in the country. “Do you know to what extent price of electricity has reached due to fuel adjustment charges” he told Raheem.
Raheem told the court that 27 IPPs were capable of providing 6870 megawatts electricity. He said the system had to bear burden of additional3000 to 4000 megawatt electricity due to use of air-conditioner.
The CJ remarked that there should be transparency in agreements to buy electricity.
The hearing was adjourned till Wednesday.
