Auckland: Spain defeated Pakistan 4-2 in their Owen G Glenn Champions Trophy hockey pool match in Auckland.
It was a match which had several flashpoints – in the first half Spain’s Roc Oliva and Pakistan’s Waseem Ahmed were shown yellow cards while Pakistan’s Abdul Haseem Khan was given a green card.
Twice Spain took the lead through captain Santi Freixa and Jorge Grabriel Dabanch and twice Pakistan equalised through Shakeel Abbasi and Sohail Abbas.
In the end Spain’s pressure told, especially in their penalty corner set piece, through which they scored three goals, including Oliva’s and the final two, both converted by Pau Quemada.
Spain had lost their opening encounter 3-2 to unbeaten Australia. Pakistan are likely to miss the play-offs, having also lost to Great Britain.
