Islamabad:Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States Hussain Haqqani has resigned from his post on Tuesday.
Haqqani Tweeted, “I have requested PM Gilani to accept my resignation as Pakistan Ambasssador to US.”
“I have much to contribute to building a new Pakistan free of bigotry & intolerance. Will focus energies on that.” he said.
According to Pakistan’s state television Haqqani’s resignation from the post has been accepted.
The sources said that Haqqani would face an inquiry on memogate issue.
Haqqani was appointed as Ambassador to US by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani in April 2008. Previously, he has held numerous high-ranking positions in and out of government, including as adviser to three former Pakistani prime ministers and as envoy to Sri Lanka, and has been a prominent journalist, scholar and educator. His appointment in 2008 marked a return to government service after being exiled in 1999 following criticisms against the government of then-President Pervez Musharraf.
Earlier, the sources said that Hussain faced series of bitter questions by the Islamabad’s military brass over memogate scandal during a high level meeting attended by President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Chief Lieutenant General Ahmed Shuja Pasha.
The sources said that Haqqani was briefing the leadership about his version on the alleged memo that sparked controversy in the country.
They said that the military brass on Monday prepared a questioner which would be given to Haqqani. The sources said that Gen Pasha presented evidences with regard to memo.
