Washington: Chief executive of Sony, Howard Stringer said that the electronics giant is all set to turn out the innovative products needed to re-energize the television market creating its own proprietary ‘smart TV’ platform.
The comments came out during a Wall Street Journal interview with Sony CEO Howard Stringer yesterday.
Howard Stringer declined to discuss details of what Sony has on the drawing board, but said, “There’s a fabulous amount of R&D going into a different kind of TV set.
“He admitted that Apple’s late leader Steve Jobs also was working on changing the traditional TV set. “That’s what we’re all looking for,” said Stringer.
Sony said last week that it expects a loss of more than $1 billion in the fiscal year through March, in part because of its struggling television business, which has been a thorn in its side for close to a decade. The business has bled red ink because of plunging prices and declining demand.
Stringer said he wouldn’t underestimate Apple’s ability to come up with a novel concept, but he noted it is a tricky process. “It will take a long time to transition to a new form of television,”.
Stringer also talked up Sony’s new “four screen” strategy designed to seamlessly sync tablets, mobile phones, personal computers and TVs, telling the Journal, “I spent the last five years building a platform so I can compete against Steve Jobs. It’s finished, and it’s launching now.” But without a leading position in any of those categories, releasing an integrated next-generation TV will still be a challenge, especially if Apple makes good on those iTV rumors. Sony watchers are hopeful that we’ll get a preview of what Sony is cooking up at the CES event in January of 2012.
