Washington: Nokia has unveiled a flexible OLED smartphone concept ‘the Kinetic’ – which is capable of physically bending and twisting.
To zoom in and out of photos the phone must be twisted in and out, while another outward twist takes the user back to the menu.
The Nokia Kinetic was revealed at the Nokia World 2011 event in London, where Nokia finally released the Lumia 710 and 800 handsets running Windows Phone 7.
Nokia says that its Kinetic prototype is not a touch screen but, instead, allows the user to drive the controls by bending and twisting actions.
A number of online commentators have suggested practical uses for the Kinetic concept. The general understanding is that it will provide a new way to navigate menus and control characters in games.
Instead of touching the screen, users interact with what is displayed by flexing the device. For example, bending the entire phone inwards allows the user to zoom in, while twisting it at the middle controls volume.
Beyond giving a physical demonstration, Nokia has so far been quite secretive over the technology behind the innovative prototype, but whether it ends up hitting the market or not, it certainly is a sight to behold.
