Peshawar: Afghan Defence Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak on Tuesday said that a joint operation by Afghan and Nato forces against the Haqqani Network was underway alongside Pakistan border.
In a statement in Kabul, the Afghan Defence minister said that the operation against the Haqqanis was named as ‘Knife Edge.’
However in Peshawar, commander of Pakistan Army northern corps, Lt. General Asif Yaseen try to down play the development. He expressed his ignorance about any unusual movement by NATO and Afghan troops. “Usually, the NATO and Afghan forces carry out operation along Pak-Afghan borders from time to time and might be it is part of such operation,” he added.
The Afghan Defence minister said that the operation had been launched two days ago along Pak-Afghan border. Meanwhile, NATO officials in Kabul has also confirmed the fresh military offensive against the Haqqanis along Pakistan’s border.
It is to be mentioned here that Pak-US relations have dipped to its lowest ebb recently following the US allegations that Pakistan security establishment uses Haqqanis as it ‘veritable arms’. The top US civil and military officials have also blamed Haqqanis of carrying out this year attack on US Embassy in Kabul.
The US and Afghan officials are dubbing North Waziristan tribal area of Pakistan as safe haven of the Haqqanis, from where, they say, the network operate and launch cross border attack on NATO and US troops
