Lahore: A top Pakistan Electric and Power Company (Pepco) official has blamed political meddling for load shedding in the country.
In an Interview with Dunya News on Thursday, Pepco Managing Director Rasool Khan Mehsood said that political appointments in every regime were among the reasons for load shedding. He added that the problem of load shedding could not be eliminated without putting an end to undue political interference, he added.
He said had the successive governments given a free hand to Pepco, the Rs300 billion circular debt could have been averted. He stressed the need to purge Pepco of incompetent employees.
Mehsood said the measures recently announced including two weekly holidays would save 800 MW. The Punjab government has the right to disagree, but Pepco is bound to follow the federal government’s load shedding schedule, he added.
He said that the federal and provincial governments owe Rs155 billion. Sindh and KESC are the biggest defaulters of Pepco, he added.
