New York: Facebook has promised to fix a key privacy breach by tonight after it was revealed the website was tracking its users across the internet.
The breach comes after the company officially denied it used cookies to follow people’s movements online.
Australian technician Nik Cubrilovic blogged about the tracking on Saturday, and was called by Facebook’s engineers in the US Tuesday afternoon.
“Even if you are logged out, Facebook still knows and can track every page you visit,” Mr Cubrilovic wrote in his blog post.
The accusation rapidly spread around the world, and Facebook was forced to defend its position.
Officials reportedly spent 40 minutes on the phone with Mr Cubrilovic after the publicity his post received.
Facebook reportedly promised to modify its technology so users could no longer be tracked once they left the site.
Its current technology puts “cookies” in internet browsers that track which websites users go to, email addresses and other information.
