New York: Maria Sharapova was made to work hard to overcome a strong challenge from Great Britain’s Heather Watson in the opening round of the US Open in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday.
The 19-year-old Watson, playing in her first senior tournament, took the first set and was doing well early in the second set until Sharapova came back to win the game 3-6 7-5 6-3.
The third seed Sharapova was happy to get the win, but admits that she made some bad selections.
