No more check-ins for you. Facebook Places is being phased out, so you can forget telling everyone that you were at the most magical place on Earth (Disneyland) or that you were busy buying plates at IKEA.
Basically what’s happening is that the mobile check-in feature is getting killed, so you won’t be able to broadcast your location anymore – wait, really? At the same time they are removing the ability to check-in, the company is also adding the ability to share your location wherever you are, to, well, anything you share on Facebook.
By default the feature is turned off, so unless you’ve gotta tell everyone Right Now that you just finished picking up some milk at the grocery store, don’t turn it on. Turns out the mobile check-in features never quite took off, which is why Facebook is saying adios to it. Proof of Places’ popularity? Seven out of the top 10 places to check-in were all at airports. Come on, guys, there’s nothing sexy about security lines. Back to Foursquare you go.
