London: England once again defeated India by an innings and eight runs to win the fourth Test on the fifth and final day at The Oval here on Monday and so completed a 4-0 whitewash in the four-match series.
India needed 291 runs in the second bat to chase a huge follow on and set the target for second bat of England.
But having been 262 for three, they lost their last seven wickets for 21 runs including Sachin Tendulkar for 91 as the ‘Little Master’ fell short of an unprecedented 100th international hundred.
Off-spinner Graeme Swann did the bulk of the damage with six wickets for 106 runs as India were dismissed for 283 before tea.
This was the first time England, who recently replaced India as the world’s top-ranked Test team, had swept a four-match series 4-0 since a clean sweep at home to the West Indies in 2004.
England chose to bat first and managed a huge total by setting the 591 runs with the loss of 6 wickets and declared the rest of the inning.
English batsman I Bell scored marvelous 235 runs, K Pietersen 175 whereas S Sreesanth got three wickets by giving 123 runs.
When India started the bat, it scored India 300 runs in which R Dravid 146 runs, while T Bresnan and G Swann got three wickets while giving 54 & 102 runs respectively.
India scored 283 in the second innings as S Tendulkar could not complete century of century again as he became out on the score of 91, as A Mishra managed 84, while G Swann got six huge wickets.
