Dubai: Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari held an unexpected meeting with MQM leader Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan in Dubai yesterday, an Arabian newspaper reported.
Senior MQM leader, who recently resigned as Governor of Sindh after his party decided to quit the PPP-led government last week, went to meet President Zardari at the Dubai International Airport yesterday morning when Zardari was on his way to Pakistan from London.
Zardari has so far not accepted the resignation of Dr Khan and reportedly urged him to continue on his position but he said the decision would be taken by the top MQM leadership. Earlier, Zardari also extended his stay in London in a bid to sort out issues with MQM Chief Altaf Hussain, but remained fail to meet MQM chief.
MQM has refused to rejoin the government despite all out efforts by the PPP leadership.
The political alliance between the PML-N and MQM was announced yesterday after a successful meeting between Senator Ishaq Dar of PML-N with MQM leaders Dr Farooq Sattar and Dr Ishratul Ibad on Monday in Dubai. Both Dar and Sattar came to Dubai from Pakistan especially to finalise the agreement on alliance.
Sources close to PML-N said that the MQM will probably get an important role in the grand opposition political alliance against the PPP government.
Earlier on Wednesday, PML-N and MQM agreed to work as combined opposition in the federal parliament and provincial assemblies, marking a step forward towards a broad-based anti-government alliance.
The agreement was announced in a joint statement after a first formal meeting between the two parties attended by senior leaders from both sides.
