Peshawar: Pakistan Army has decided to launch a military offensive against the militants, operating in the Kurram tribal area near Afghan border.
Talking to media on Thursday Corps Commander Peshawar Let Gen Asif Yasif Malik told media that the army decided to go after the militants in Kurram Agency after consultation with grand tribal Jirga.
He said the militants were fanning sectarian extremism in the area.”The operation will be launched soon to purge the area of extremists,” he said, adding that peace would be restored in the region after expelling them.
The general said areas of Khyber,Mohmand, Bajaur and Deer had been cleared while operation was underway in the central areas.
Pakistan’s military has been fighting a Taliban-led insurgency in country’s northwestern tribal region since 2009 and has been repeatedly resisting US demands to go after Haqqani Network, largely believed to have been stationed in North Waziristan.
