Islamabad: Former Director General Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) Lieutenant General (Retd) Hameed Gul said US was in illusion that it could hold sussessful negotiations with Taliban by keeping Pakistan out of the process. Without Pakistan peace talks with Taliban are distend to failure.
Talking to The News Tribe here, Hamid Gul said that though Taliban had complaints against Pakistan but these were not so serious that due these Taliban would prefer US over Pakistan. Taliban were demanding US to give clear timetable for complete withdrawal from Afghanistan, saying that only after that they would come to table for talks with US.
Gul, who is dubbed as the architect of USSR’s defeat in Afghanistan, said that US had three major objectives to fulfill before withdrawal, which are, persuading Taliban to join Karzai-led government, recognize the current constitution and accept the permanent US military bases in Afghanistan. Gul said these were similar to the US conditions before USSR’s withdrawal from Afghanistan.
He said that the key to solution of Afghan problem was with Pakistan. He said that keeping Pakistan out no peace negotiation could be successful.
