Washington: White House Wednesday said that United States President Barack Obama would call on NATO Chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen on Friday to discuss Libya, Afghanistan and other issues.
“Obama and Rasmussen will discuss NATO’s role enforcing UN Security Council Resolutions 1970 and 1973 on Libya, including the protection of Libyan civilians,” the White House said in a statement.
The US handed over control of the military operation, which includes enforcing a no-fly zone, arms embargo and air raids on Libyan government targets, to NATO in late March, and Libyan opposition forces and government troops are now locked in a deadlock on the ground.
“The leaders will also review NATO’s progress in Afghanistan and look forward to the next NATO summit, which the president will host in the United States in 2012,” the release said.
The US and its NATO allies are scheduled to begin a drawdown of their troops in Afghanistan in July and bring all combat forces out by the end of 2014.
