Damascus: Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Saturday announced to lift 44-year-old emergency from the country that was imposed in 1968.
While addressing first session of the new Syrian government al-Assad said “the laws to lift state of emergency will be enacted by next week”. He realised there is a gap between citizens and the state institutions and that the government has to “keep up with the aspirations of the people”.
He said the Syrian government is working hard to get support from masses. “We have to focus on the demands and the aspirations of the people or there will be a sense of anger,” he added.
Earlier on Thursday, Syrian Prime Minister Adel Safar said the new cabinet that board changes, including lifting the emergency law and replacing it with new anti-terrorism legislation would be carried out. But the government has little power in the one-party state dominated by Assad, his family and the security apparatus.
