Washington: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi “knows what he needs to do, step down and leave Libya”.
Clinton comments came as White House confirmed that President Barack Obama had received a letter from Gaddafi.
She said, “With respect to the letter you referred to, I think that Mr Gaddafi knows what he must do. “There need to be a ceasefire, his forces need to withdraw from the cities that they have forcibly taken..there need to be a decision made about his departure from power and…his departure from power.”
Clinton said an emergency plan has been prepared regarding Libya and to resolve Libya issue in not a crux.
Gaddafi sent the message “following the withdrawal of America from the crusader colonial alliance against Libya”, Libya’s official news agency JANA earlier said.
Meanwhile, NATO spokeswoman Carmen Romero said Libyan forces are seeking protection through the use of human shields.
“The situation on the ground is constantly evolving – Gaddafi’s forces are changing tactics, using civilian vehicles, hiding tanks in cities such as Misrata and using human shields to hide behind,” Romero added.
Ms Romero also rejected criticism leveled at NATO by rebels who said the alliance is too slow in launching airstrikes. She said, “The pace of our operations continues unabated. The ambition and the position of our strikes has not changed.”
