Mumbai: India has become a new cricket champion after defeating Sri Lanka in the final contest of the World Cup final 2011 final by six wickets at Wankhede Stadium on Saturday.
Gautam Gambhir and Mahindra Singh Dhoni played crucial role in team India win and chased the total of 275 in 49th over. GAmbhir scored 97 run while Dhoni scored 91 runs not out and also played finishing shot. Virat Kholi, Yuvraj Singh and Sachin Tendulkar scored 35, 22 and 18 runs respectively.
Lasith Malinga picked up two wickets while Thisara Perera and Tilakaratne Dilshan got one wicket each.
Earlier, Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara won the toss and elected to bat first. They scored 274 runs on board in allotted 50 overs.
Mahela Jayawardene was the top scorer from Sri Lanka who scored 103 runs while Sangakkara scored 48 runs. Dilshan, Nuwan Kulasekara, Perera and Thilan Samaraweera scored 33, 32, 22 and 21 runs respectively.
Zaheer Khan and Yunraj Singh shared two wickets apart, while Harbajhan Singh got one wicket. One Sri Lankan batsman was run out by Dhoni.
Dhoni was declared man of the match because of his under pressure inning.
Losing captain Sangakkara said the way that India played today is appreciable. He congratulated India for winning the mega event.
He said the world cup was a great experience for Sri Lankan side but India is deserved for the trophy as the performed in the final.
Indian captain Dhoni said all the boys (Indian players) struggled hard for couple of weeks and spent a lot of time in practice, in dressing room and on the field to achieve the trophy. He said what they had planned before the match has been achieved.
Dhoni said Ghambir played an important inning at right time.
Yuvraj Singh was declared man of the tournament as he not only performed well from his bat but also bowled well. Singh dedicated his award to his Guru and parent.
Later, World Cup trophy was given to Indian skipper Mahindra Singh Dhoni.
India won the world cup second time after 28-year long period. India won the first title of world cup in 1983 in the leadership of Kapil Dev.
