Colombo: Shahid Afridi took five wickets, second time in the world cup, to help Pakistan avoid a defeat against minnows Canada on Thursday.
Canada were all out at 138 in the 43rd over, 47 runs short of their target at R Premasada Stadium in Sri Lanka. They had crossed the 100-run mark having lost only three wickets, but then a magical spell of legbreak bowling by the Pakistani skipper sank them. They lost their last seven wickets just for 34 runs.
Abdul Razzaq, Umar Gul, Wahab Riaz and Saeed Ajmal took one wicket apiece. A brilliant throw from Afridi had Balaji Rao, who had been involved in a spat with Umar Gul, run out.
Earlier, Pakistan once again showed that their batting line was as brittle as ever. Having chosen to bat first, they lost their first four wickets at just 67 runs. Then Misbah and Umar Akmal brought some stability before Umar fell at 140 in the 35th over having scored 48 runs. Misbah and Afridi then took the total to 165 where Misbah departed at his individual score of 37. Afridi scored 20 before leaving at 181. Pakistan were all out for 184, losing their last six wickets for just 44 runs.
