Islamabad: Opposition parties in the National Assembly on Tuesday staged a walk-out against the increase in prices of petroleum products.
The parties that staged walkout were Pakistan Muslim League-N, Pakistan Muslim League–Quaid and Muttihada Qaumi Movement.
The protesting legislators argued that the increase in prices of petroleum products would further burden the masses already groaning under high inflation.
MQM leader Haider Abbas Rizvi said that although the government had decided that a parliamentary committee would review the matter before prices could be increased, it gave the go-ahead to price hike without the committee’s approval.
PML-N’s Aftab Sheikh urged the government to seriously reconsider the hike.
PML-Q’s Sheikh Waqas Akram said prices of petroleum, one way or the other, affected prices of every commodity in every sector.
The government on Monday increased prices of petroleum products by up to 9.9 percent.
MQM has given a three-day deadline to the government to withdraw its decision.
