Washington: United States President Barack Obama on Tuesday said that Pakistan has been asked to release Raymond Davis, who killed Pakistani nationals in Lahore on January 27, because he is a diplomat.
He said Government of Pakistan should recognize Davis as a US diplomat and immediately release him under the Vienna Convention as Pakistan is the signatory to it. He said every diplomat enjoys immunity under the convention. He expected Pakistan to abide by the same convention.
Obama also expressed sorrow over the loss of lives of Pakistanis who were killed by Davis but he said according to international law Davis cannot be presented before court because Davis is a diplomat.
