Sanaa: Thousands of Yemeni students and lawyers took to the streets on the second consecutive day on Monday demanding ouster of President Ali Abdullah Saleha, news agency reported on Monday.
As many as 3,000 protesters tried to march from Sanaa University to Al-Tahrir square in the city centre where Saleh’s supporters have been camped since last week, but were prevented by security forces who erected razor wire.
On Sunday, anti-riot police used batons to disperse a protest by an estimated 2,000 demonstrators in Sanaa, injuring a woman and making 10 arrests, according to witnesses.
The protesters, mainly students and civil society activists, chanted slogans calling on Saleh, who has been in power for 32 years, to follow the example of Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak who was forced out of power on Friday on the 18th day of uprising against his autocratic rule.
“After Mubarak, Ali,” they chanted during Monday’s protest. “No corruption after today.”They also carried banners reading: “The people want to oust the regime” — the same slogans used by protesters in Egypt.
