Worldwide, more than a million people are dependent on dialysis, with up to a fifth of the number dying each year.
For instance in the Unites States (US), one in eight dialysis patients who will die each year. Until now, no one has shown how to reduce this high risk.
George Institute researchers have identified that blood pressure lowering treatment significantly reduces the risk of death for dialysis patients.
The report concluded that “treatment with agents that lower blood pressure should routinely be considered for individuals undergoing dialysis to reduce the very high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality rate in this population,” according to a George release.
As a world-first, this systematic review will be published online in the Lancet.
