Karachi: The Chief Executive (CE), Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC), Tabish Gohar has said that despite the reinstatement of more than 4000 sacked employees of KESC, there would be further lay offs.
Talking to journalists at the KESC head office, he said that the issue was not yet over, and strongly castigated the government’s interference, which had harmed the issue to quite an extent.
He said that KESC had always stressed on the government to publicize the issue of privatization of KESC, but the government was side tracking the issue.
He took full responsibility for sacking 4000 employees, but when questioned regarding possible resignation over the issue, he parried the question. He said that government was outraged for not being taken into confidence regarding sacking of employees, but insisted that government had been informed well in advance about the policy; and the government had assured that if every thing was carried out legally, it would have no objection.
He said that he was least prepared for violent attacks on KESC HQs as reaction, and did not expect police and law enforcement agencies to sit as idle spectators during the entire havoc, which could/would make the future investors think twice about investing in Pakistan.
He said that the government had ensured KESC of being free in its decisions and policies; but when media demanded a copy of that accord, it simply gave a verbal assurance, which he retracted only minutes later under the excuse of ‘confidential matters’.
He complained that KESC was duly pressurized over the issue of lay-offs, even to the extent of being warned of such dire consequences as terrorism.
Gohar warned that if the KESC were not allowed a free hand in its decisions and policies, it would simply hand over the administration to government.
