Islamabad: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Monday summoned the commerce secretary with an audit report of the National Insurance Company Limited (NICL).
A three-member bench of the apex court, comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Ghulam Rabbani and Justice Khalilur Rehman Ramday, heard a suo motu case regarding NICL corruption.
The bench annoyed over transfer of the officers investigating the case and remarked that inquiry officer Zafar Iqbal and others were removed from the case as they were probing the matter in the right direction.
The CJ ordered the deputy director Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to restore the officers or else the court would revoke their transfer orders.
The deputy director contended that the agency had arrested Muhammad Maalik allegedly involved in the scam. He further said that Rs5 billion was embezzled in the scam.
The court observed Rs18 billion was misappropriated, adding the FIA was doing nothing to nab the elements involved in the corruption scandal.
The court ordered that all the accused in the case be arrested immediately, adding all the thieves have been gathered to protect unscrupulous elements.
The Chief Justice suspended the four-member investigation team probing the case and summoned the interior secretary and the inquiry team officials.
