KARACHI: The year 2010 was the bloodiest for Karachi since 1995, says a report. The city saw 801 killings in 2010, the highest number since 1995 when 1742 people were killed, the report added.
It is pertinent to mention here that the then Nawaz Sharif government had launched an operation against ‘terrorists’ in Karachi in 1992, which was continued by his arch-rival Benazir Bhutto after coming into power in 1993. Most of the killings were taken place either in police encounters or terrorists’ attacks on police and innocent citizens.
But there was no operation in 2010 against anyone. Still over 800 people lost their lives in a year.
In the first 13 days of 2011, 40 people were killed.
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement, which represents a part of Urdu-speaking middle-class of Karachi and Hyderabad, and Awami National Party, a Pakhtoon nationalist party, are blamed for the current spate of killings in Karachi.
