ITALY: More than 700 dead doves have been picked up since January 1 from the streets of Faenza, in northern Italy.
The mystery of dead birds falling from the sky have been seen since over the past two week in the United States and Sweden and now it has started in a town in northern Italy.
An Italian association for bird protection on Saturday said, over 700 doves have been picked up from the streets of Faenza, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) southeast of Bologna.
Initial testing suggests signs of poisoning or hypoxia — lack of oxygen caused due to altitude sickness. Hypoxia is known to cause confusion and illness in animals.
Nadia Caselli of the bird association believes that the birds had over eaten sunflower seeds, which damage their livers and kidneys, a foreign news agency quoted.
The seeds are mostly waste from a nearby oil factory.
