Karachi: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, who is in Karachi since Thursday night to shore up support for his fading coalition government, will visit ‘Nine-Zero’, the headquarter of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), to persuade its local leadership to rejoin the the government.
Sources in Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) told The News Tribe that some headways were made in behind the door contacts and the prime minister will visit Nine-Zero that might result in MQM’s withdrawal from its earlier decision of quitting the government.
Sources privy to the late night negotiations between the government team and the MQM say that the latter has made up its mind to rejoin the coalition government if the prime minister takes some concrete steps to remove its reservations.
The MQM’s Coordination Committee which met simultaneously in Karachi and London discussed the overall political situation and evolved a strategy regarding PM’s expected visit to the party’s headquarter.
The departure of MQM and JUI-F from the coalition deprived the PPP government of its majority in parliament.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Gilani held a detailed meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari, who is also in the city, and apprised him about his ongoing negotiations with the MQM leadership, especially with Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad. After the meeting, the prime minister held another meeting with the the governor to discuss the MQM reservations. Interior Minister Rehman Malik and Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah and others were also present in the meeting.
