“Oh no! I missed the point! What the hell! What to do now? What else! Pay higher fare to the minibus and walk all the way to the department!”
These are the words I used to say to myself whenever I missed the point during my university days. This was always the most distressing thing because then I had to walk almost two miles to get to my department.
It has been four years and a half since I completed my education. But I still feel the anguish every morning when I pass by the university gates going to my office and see girls and boys getting off minibuses, buses and coaches and starting their long walks.
A few days ago I thought I should do a survey to find out what things trouble the students of the University of Karachi. And what are those things that make them happy? So I, now a correspondent of The News Tribe, conducted a week-long survey to get to the hearts of the KU students.
And guess what! The survey revealed that the long walks in the university remain the most troublesome aspect of studying at the KU. Most students said the long walks on the campus tire them so much that they sometimes feel like not going at all if they miss the point. “Whenever I miss the point I feel as if I have committed a crime because then I have to walk in scorching heat for two miles which is no less than a punishment,” said a female student of Area Study Centre. “And in these days of Ramazan the punishment gets all the more severe.”
Some other students said the clashes between student groups are most distressing thing on the campus. They say the clashes ruin their studies. Many students, particularly girls, said they enjoy watching clashes. But when arms are used during clashes, they get frightened. “It’t like watching a bollywood movie, but when they start firing at each other we have to run away,” said a girl, who did not wish to be named.
A student said the non-cooperative attitude of clerks is most annoying. “They make us run. We have to run from one place to another and even then they point out irregularities in our paper work. I feel they sometimes do it on purpose to feel that they are something big.”
Some students said the scheduling of classes and exams are almost always troubling for them. They say sometimes exams are scheduled in such a way that students don’t get to rest. They have to study continuously during exam days.
But most students said the joys on the campus outnumber the problems. They said spending time with friends on the campus is the most enjoyable thing in the 24 hours of the day. Some students said meeting ‘someone’ on the campus was the thing that overjoyed them. They chose not to explain what they meant by ‘someone’. But you can of course guess.
Many students said the student week is the happiest time of the year at the KU when they get to showcase their skills. Some others said they enjoy the annual picnic, welcome and farewell parties, and treats given by friends the most. Some overly serious students said they enjoy getting positions. “We enjoy ourselves so much when we are finally in our departments with our friends that we forget all the problems we face here,” said a beaming girl. “I am sure I can never forget the days spent on this campus.”
