Islamabad: The Supreme Court on Wednesday took suo moto notice of the ongoing ethnic bloodletting in Karachi and issued notices to Inspector General Police (IGP) Sindh and Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) for August 26, besides asking the presidents of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and Sindh High Court Bar Association to assist the court on the matter.
Taking suo moto notice of the bloodshed, the SC fixed the matter for hearing on August 26. A two-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and Justice Ghulam Rabbani will hear the case.
The apex court has asked the chief secretary Sindh to submit complete report about the people killed and injured in violence during the last one month in Karachi, besides registration of FIRs and incidents of human rights’ violation.
Earlier on Monday the Supreme Court had asked the electronic media to provide by Tuesday copies of programmes and footages they had aired about recent incidents of target killing.
The directive to summon the footage came when the Human Rights Cell of the Supreme Court took notice of an appeal by Pakistan Awami Tehrik’s chief Dr Mohammad Tahirul Qadri and placed the case before Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry.
“Bodies of people are being thrown out of speeding cars, dozen of people are being killed daily, passengers are being kidnapped from transport buses,” Dr Qadri is reported to have said and asked why credible institutions like the armed forces and the Supreme Court were silent spectators.“CDs (compact disks) and DVDs (digital video disks) from different channels be collected,” the chief justice ordered after going through the file.
Today when the material was placed before the Chief Justice he took suo moto notice of the senseless killing.
