China: Deadly Tornado Strikes Guangzhou, Killing Five and Injuring 33

Beijing: A devastating tornado hit Guangzhou, a bustling city of 19 million in southern China, on Saturday, resulting in at least five deaths and injuring 33 people. Chinese authorities report that the tornado damaged 141 factory buildings, though no residential structures were reported as collapsed.

According to reports, the tornado occurred in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province, situated approximately 130 kilometers from Hong Kong. In the Baiyun District, just 1.7 miles from the tornado’s path, a weather station recorded wind gusts peaking at 20.6 meters per second.

Following the tornado, authorities concluded search and rescue operations on Saturday. This natural disaster follows several days of heavy rainfall across southern China, which have caused severe flooding, impacting millions and escalating into a significant humanitarian crisis.

In Guangdong province alone, an economic hub with a population of 127 million, floods have necessitated the relocation of over 110,000 people. This region, part of China’s manufacturing heartland, has been particularly hard-hit, with four weather stations recording the highest rainfall for April ever noted in the area.

The recent weather events in China, including the tornado and unprecedented rainfall, are part of a broader pattern of severe weather linked to climate change, which is expected to increase both the frequency and intensity of such events. The China Meteorological Agency has issued warnings that heavy rains and strong storms are likely to persist until the end of the month, indicating ongoing challenges for disaster response and management in the region.
