Karachi: Provincial government of Sindh on Monday has called a high-level session for commencing review and initial essential work for re-building of Sukkur barrage.
The high-level session has been called after the letter by opposition leader Syed Khursheed Shah to the Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif which demanded re-construction of Sukkur Barrage.
The Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Qaim Ali Shah and the Chief Secretary will also attend the meeting while other prominent governmental officials and expert would join the meeting.
It should be mentioned that the barrage is located on the River Indus near the city of Sukkur having significant importance due to its wide-scale purposes of irrigation and flood control across the province but currently in deteriorated situation after complete negligence of the ruling powers.
According to governmental statistics, the barrage enables water to flow through a canals network up to 6,166 miles long, feeding the largest irrigation system in the world, with more than 5 million acres (20,000 km²) of irrigated land.
