Islamabad: The deadline for the submission of nomination papers from candidates willing to take part in May 11, 2013 elections has ended, here on Sunday night.
Earlier, Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) extended the date for the submission of nomination papers all over Pakistan by eight hours on Sunday.
According to ECP, more than 7000 nomination papers were filed from all across the country. More than 2500 candidates submitted their nomination papers for National assembly while the rest has submitted the papers for provincial assembly.
More than 15000 candidates submitted their nomination papers in 2008 reducing it to half in 2013. Analysts say the reduction of nomination papers was due to the strict procedure and scrutiny of the ECP.
The ECP said that 13 political parties have submitted names for the minorities’ seats.
Earlier today, huge crowds were seen in the Election Commission offices in different parts of the country. The number of registered parties in the country stands at 247, and thousands of candidates were trying to file papers within the given deadline.
As per the new schedule, appeals can be filed against the candidates from April 8-10 and will be processed from April 11-16. The election date remains May 11.
